Billing, Insurance, and Payment

How much is a visit at The EDS Clinic?

The most common visit price is $460, but your exact price is always confirmed before you are scheduled so there are no surprises.

The price varies by state, provider, and visit type. Most visits cost between $250 and $700.  Visits with our medical director are generally more expensive at $700 for a new patient visit.

Patients typically pay the same rate for both initial and follow-up visits, and not every patient requires a longer or higher-cost appointment. If a lower-cost visit option is appropriate, our team will let you know.

Does The EDS Clinic accept insurance?

No. The EDS Clinic is a direct-pay practice and does not bill insurance.

Does The EDS Clinic accept Medicare and Medicaid?

No, The EDS Clinic is not able to  see patients who are enrolled with Medicare or Medicaid.  This is due to state and federal regulations that limit telehealth reimbursement and restrict access to direct-pay services for beneficiaries of these programs.

Can patients be reimbursed by their insurance?

We can provide a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement upon request. Reimbursement from your insurance company is not guaranteed. Patients are responsible for checking their own benefits with their insurance plans.

How and when do you pay?

A few weeks before your scheduled visit, you will be texted and/or emailed a payment link. This is typically sent a couple of weeks before your planned visit.

Payment is required:

  • 7 days before your appointment, or
  • If scheduled less than 7 days in advance, payment is due within 12 hours of scheduling your visit

All balances must be paid before future visits can be scheduled.

What forms of payment do we accept?

We accept:

  • Credit and debit cards
  • HSA and FSA cards

We do not accept

  • CareCredit
  • Direct payment from insurance companies

Telehealth, Accessing Care, & Scheduling

Is The EDS Clinic in-person or telehealth?

The EDS Clinic is a telehealth-only practice. All visits are conducted by secure video.

What do I need for a telehealth visit?

You will need a reliable internet connection and a device with a camera and microphone.

Where must I be located during my visit?

Due to legal requirements:

  • You must be a resident of the state where you are scheduled to see the provider
  • You also must be physically located in your state of residence at the time of your visit
  • You must not be driving during their appointment.
  • You must provide proof of identity and current address

We do not recommend or allow patients to travel to a different state or country in order to schedule an appointment with our providers. Please notify us if your current location, address, or state changes

Do you have a waitlist?

Yes. All new patients are added to a waitlist. Appointments are offered in the order requests are received.

How long is the wait?

Wait times vary by state and provider availability. Typical wait times are 1-6 months for states where we are actively scheduling and 6-12 months for states not currently listed above. Wait times vary based on many factors, and we are not able to provide more exact wait times for your specific case.

How will I be notified when it’s time to schedule?

We will send you a text message to the number that you provided on your appointment request form. This text message will come from our new patient scheduling number 872-266-7876.
Please note, that this number is only for new patient scheduling. It is not the main phone number listed on our website.

Appointments and Care Process

What happens during my first appointment?

Most initial visits include a review of intake forms and prior medical records, a discussion of symptoms and health history, an overview of EDS/hEDS diagnostic criteria, diagnosis when appropriate, and screening for common associated conditions such as POTS and MCAS.

What happens after the visit?

After your appointment, you will receive a written care plan and access to your visit notes through the patient portal.

Our patient portal is Elation Passport.

Do you see international patients?

No, we do not provide appointments to individuals residing outside of the USA . You must be a resident with a residential address in the United States in a state where we are able to provide care. We do not recommend patients travel for care with our clinic. All patients must be a resident of the state where they are seeking care.

Do you provide emergency care?

No. We do not provide urgent or emergency services.

If you need urgent or emergency care, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Accommodation Documentation

Can the EDS Clinic help with disability, work, school & accommodation documentation?

In some situations, yes, The EDS Clinic can help with disability documentation. After care has been established, we may provide limited medical documentation to support accommodations when they are clinically appropriate.

We do not provide permanent disability determinations, ongoing disability certification, social security disability (SSDI/SSI) paperwork, or long-term disability management or recertification.

Because disability determinations often require longitudinal functional assessments, these services are best handled by local, in-person providers.

Policy Updates

Policies may change over time and are subject to change. The most current version will always be posted on our website.

FAQs

Is the EDS Clinic a scam?

No, The EDS Clinic is staffed by licensed healthcare providers. We evaluate and treat more patients with EDS than most other clinics around the world. We aren’t a big clinic, and we focus the majority of our time and effort on providing care. We acknowledge that the new patient onboarding software and process can feel a bit clunky, but patients are almost universally satisfied with the medical care we provide.

When you reach the front of the waitlist, your initial onboarding and scheduling invitation will be sent by our new patient scheduling team from the phone number: 872-266-7876.

Should you want to speak with someone before scheduling an appointment, please call and leave a voicemail at 812-200-0843.

We do our best to respond to all inquiries, but please keep in mind our administrative team is very small. We prioritize calls from current patients and from people who have completed the intake forms.

Why doesn’t the EDS Clinic take insurance?

We do not currently participate in insurance networks for many reasons. One of the main reasons is that direct payments allow us to provide longer, more in-depth appointments and more personalized care. With this model, we offer clear, upfront pricing and focus on serving your needs instead of the insurance company’s requirements.

Can patients use insurance for lab orders and prescription medications?

Typically, yes, patients are able to get insurance coverage for the labs and medications that are ordered by our clinicians, but many patients are often surprised to learn that insurance coverage is not always the cheapest option. We do our best to offer the most affordable and cost effective options for medications, labs, and other orders.

Some plans will not cover medication or labs ordered by our providers. These include Medicare, Medicaid, and many HMOs. While we are currently able to see some patients with HMO based insurance plans, we are currently unable to see patients who are enrolled with Medicaid or Medicare.

Superbills & Reimbursement

As a direct pay clinic, we understand that navigating insurance reimbursement is an important part of your healthcare journey with us. We strive to be transparent about our costs to help you make informed decisions about your care.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a detailed, itemized document that contains all the information insurance companies need to process your reimbursement claim. It includes visit dates, service descriptions, procedure codes (CPT), diagnosis codes (ICD-10), provider information, and associated charges. To support you in this process, we provide a comprehensive superbill after your appointment that you can submit directly to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

Requesting a Superbill From Our Clinic

Your insurance plan may offer out-of-network reimbursement options depending on your specific policy details. Payment is due before your appointment, and you can request the superbill immediately after your appointment concludes by sending a message through the portal. Please allow 3-5 business days for your request to be processed. Your completed superbill will be sent in your patient portal once ready. If you experience any difficulties accessing or understanding your superbill, please send a patient portal message, and we'll be happy to assist you.

Submitting Your Superbill to Insurance

While some insurance companies allow up to a year for submission, many have a 90-day deadline for superbill submission and reimbursement claims. For faster processing, we recommend submitting your superbill to your insurance company promptly. Typical reimbursement processing time is 2-4 weeks.

Preparing for Insurance Reimbursement

If you want to reach out to your insurance company ahead of time to inquire about potential reimbursement, you can ask the agent about about the following CPT codes:

First visit: 99205, 99417, modifier 95
Follow-up visits: 99215, 99417, modifier 95
Some insurance companies may require telehealth specific codes.

First visit: 98003, 99417
Follow-up visit: 99007, 99417

If your insurance company asks for ICD codes, please know that these codes will vary greatly based on your appointment and what is discussed. However, common codes may include:

Condition (ICD-10)
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (Q79.6)
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, unspecified (Q79.60)
  • Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (Q79.62)
  • Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (G90.A)
  • Orthostatic Hypotension (I95.1)
  • Mast Cell Activation (D89.40)
  • Chronic Fatigue (G93.32)
  • Chronic Pain (G89.29)
  • Gastrointestinal Dysmotility (K59.89)

We recommend contacting your insurance provider before scheduling an appointment to understand your coverage options. This call can help you determine potential reimbursement amounts and any requirements from your insurer. However, this step is not necessary to obtain an appointment with our clinic.

Medicare, Medicaid, and Tricare

Medicare and Medicaid programs do not provide reimbursement via superbill. We are not able to see patients enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid programs due to federal and state restrictions.

Patients enrolled in Tricare are eligible to be seen by the EDS Clinic but are unlikely to be reimbursed by their insurance via superbill without a Prior Authorization. It is the patient’s responsibility to reach out to their Tricare medical team ahead of time to obtain prior authorization before scheduling with our clinic.
