The EDS Clinic Expands Expert Care in Florida

The EDS Clinic is excited to welcome Dr. Frank Lichtenberger, MD, PhD, to our growing team of specialists dedicated to caring for individuals with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD), Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), Histamine Intolerance, Hereditary Alpha Tryptasemia (HaT), POTS, and related complex chronic illnesses.

Dr. Lichtenberger is now seeing patients throughout Florida via telehealth, bringing decades of clinical and research expertise to patients who often struggle to find physicians experienced in the complex immune and allergic disorders that frequently accompany EDS.

As The EDS Clinic continues to expand access to specialized care across the United States, we are proud to add one of the country's most experienced physicians in mast cell disorders and clinical immunology to our team.

Meet Dr. Frank Lichtenberger

Dr. Frank Lichtenberger is a board-certified Allergist-Immunologist with more than 20 years of clinical and research experience treating complex immune-mediated disease.

Following completion of his MD and PhD through the Medical Scientist Training Program at The Ohio State University, where he studied the biology of chronic inflammation, he completed an Internal Medicine residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center before pursuing fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Laboratory of Allergic Diseases.

His fellowship focused on mast cell biology at one of the world's leading research centers responsible for advancing much of today's understanding of mast cell disease.

During his time at the NIH, Dr. Lichtenberger developed extensive expertise in:

  • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)
  • Systemic Mastocytosis
  • Hereditary Alpha Tryptasemia (HaT)
  • Complex allergic disease
  • Primary and secondary immunodeficiencies

He also served as an immunology consultant for the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Program, helped develop teaching protocols for anaphylaxis, and continues to serve on the AAAAI Mast Cell Disorders Committee.

Long before MCAS became widely recognized, Dr. Lichtenberger was already evaluating and treating patients with mast cell disorders, making him one of the few physicians with decades of dedicated experience in this field.

Expertise at the Intersection of EDS and Immunology

Many individuals with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome experience overlapping immune and allergic conditions that can be difficult to recognize and manage.

Dr. Lichtenberger's practice focuses on the intersection of connective tissue disorders, immunology, allergy, and multisystem disease.

He routinely evaluates patients with:

  • Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)
  • Systemic Mastocytosis
  • Hereditary Alpha Tryptasemia (HaT)
  • Chronic allergic disease
  • Recurrent anaphylaxis
  • Primary and secondary immunodeficiencies
  • Complex multisystem illnesses that have remained unexplained despite extensive prior evaluations

His academic background, combined with years of clinical practice, allows him to approach difficult diagnostic cases with both scientific rigor and practical experience.

A Thoughtful, Academic Approach to Patient Care

Dr. Lichtenberger believes that every patient encounter is an opportunity to learn.

"After completing a fellowship in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at the National Institutes of Health, I entered independent practice, but I still bring a rigorous academic approach to patient care. I try to learn from every patient. I believe each visit is an opportunity to listen, learn, and improve my approach."
Dr. Frank Lichtenberger

This philosophy closely reflects The EDS Clinic's commitment to listening carefully, validating patients' experiences, and delivering evidence-based, individualized care for complex chronic illnesses.

Dr. Lichtenberger is also the author of Allergic to Life: How the Human Body Rejects the Modern World, which explores the science behind modern allergic and immune diseases.

Together, our providers bring expertise across complex connective tissue and immunological disorders.

Dr. Lichtenberger is also the newest Board Certified Allergy and Immunology specialist on our team, joining Dr. Jim Harris, MD, our Medical Director. Together, Drs.
